One of the world's best universities, NUI Galway, is to exhibit at Jobs Expo Galway in February. NUI Galway is a constituent university of the National University of Ireland. It is ranked among the top 2 per cent of universities in the world.

A brief history of NUI Galway

Founded in 1845, NUI Galway has earned international recognition. It is as a research-led university, which also has a commitment to top quality teaching.

The university opened in 1849 as Queen's College, Galway. The following year it became part of the Queen's University of Ireland. It became a constituent college of the new National University of Ireland in 1908. In 1997 it became known as the National University of Ireland, Galway. NUIG announced plans in 2015 to make the university a "campus of the future.”

The university today

The NUIG campus is in the city centre. Galway is a vibrant city and home to a number of cultural and sporting festivals. It is also a young city, and students make up a fifth of the city’s population.

The university has more than 17,000 students as well as around 2,500 staff. NUI Galway teaches over 60 disciplines across 16 Schools and five Colleges.

NUI Galway attracts over €50 million in direct research income annually. In addition, NUIG is home to a number of internationally recognised research centres and institutes.

Furthermore, at their Centre for Adult Learning and Professional Development, NUI Galway offers an extensive range of professional, part-time and evening courses. These affordable and flexible part-time courses cover a variety of subject areas such as Business & Management, Science & Technology, Arts & Social Sciences, Community Education, Early Childhood Studies and Training & Education – as well as short courses, CPD courses, Springboard courses and online courses.

There has been good news and bad news for the Irish jobs market during the year. Since the shock Brexit result of 23 June 2016 there has been economic uncertainty in both the UK and Ireland. Given this, IBEC has revised its growth forecasts for the Irish economy. IBEC reduced their growth predictions for 2017 from 3.2% to 2.8%.

Although many companies have made contingency plans to leave the UK after Article 50 is triggered and the UK begins formal negotiations to withdraw from the European Union, it is unclear how many of them will choose to relocate to Ireland.

Gerard Brady, a senior economist with IBEC said: “To date, Ireland’s impressive growth has been spurred on by relatively strong US and UK performances, a benign global backdrop, low interest rates, falling oil prices and favourable exchange rates. But the world is becoming more unstable, politically and economically. We can no longer rely on these external factors.”

Irish SMEs and exporters threatened by weak sterling

IBEC also warned that concerns over Brexit are threatening Irish-owned businesses.  In particular, a weak sterling against the euro is damaging the profitability of Irish SMEs who export to the UK.

“The impact of sterling’s collapse on indigenous exporters is a massive worry. Output in food manufacturing, our largest indigenous export sector, fell by 2% annually in the first three quarters of the year and turnover was down by over 2.8%,” said Brady.

Jobs growth set to continue

Its not all bad news. IBEC believes that employment levels will continue to improve. The group expects that jobs growth during 2017 will see employment levels return to their 2006 peak by the end of the year.

Most noteworthy was the growth in multinationals, says IBEC, which are responsible for driving Irish economic expansion.

In addition, a report published in early December found that 84% of employers in Ireland plan on recruiting staff in the next year.

In September, figures from the CSO showed that the unemployment rate dropped by 12.5%. This was the 17th consecutive quarter in which unemployment declined. During 2016 an additional 57,500 people in Ireland found jobs. The greatest increase came from full-time employment. Full-time positions accounted for 44,800 jobs, while those in part-time employment grew by 12,800. Furthermore, the vast majority of these jobs were outside of Dublin.

The biggest rates of increase were in the accommodation and food service activities, which saw an increase in employment of 9.6%. The construction sector saw jobs growth of 7.3%.

Construction industry booming

The Irish construction industry continues to grow. It has been one of the best performing sectors of the Irish economy in 2016. As a result, the sector has been struggling to fill open positions. Therefore, the Construction Industry Federation is targeting Irish construction workers living overseas. Furthermore, a CIF report states that construction can sustain an extra 112,000 jobs up to 2020.

Tourism on the increase

There was more good news from Ireland’s tourism sector. This has been a record year and an estimated 10.5 million people will have visited Ireland before the end of 2016. This is a significant increase over the approximately 9 million people who visited in 2015. According to Tourism Ireland, 2017 is set to perform even better.

Some recent jobs announcements

There has been a significant number of jobs announcements over 2016. Here are some of the largest announced in the last quarter of 2016.

Good news for shoppers and retail workers! On Thursday 8 December, grocery giants Lidl announced 20 new jobs at their brand new store in Sallynoggin Avenue, Glenageary. This is Lidl’s 149th Irish store. The company now employs 4280 people in Ireland.

A greener supermarket

A unique feature of the new store's building is the green roof. Partially covered in vegetation, the green roof absorbs rainwater. This provides insulation as well as reduces the need for in-store drainage systems.

Speaking about the opening, Niall Murray, Regional Director at Lidl Ireland, said:

“We are delighted to be opening our 149th Lidl Ireland store just in time for Christmas. We have some fantastic offers in store to celebrate this opening and are really looking forward to welcoming our new customers to the store. The opening of our 36th Dublin store brings with it 20 new jobs for the area, reinforcing our commitment to local employment. We are thrilled to celebrate our store opening by making a number of charitable voucher donations to local organisations, such as Carmona Services Glenageary and Men’s Shed Dun Laoghaire. ”

Local produce and suppliers

Lidl works with over 180 Irish suppliers. As a result, they can bring the best fresh, local produce to its network of stores throughout the Republic of Ireland. In addition, Lidl Ireland invests €500 million per annum in sourcing Irish goods and services.

About Lidl

Lidl is an international business and global supermarket chain. Established in 1930 as a food wholesaler, their first discount supermarket opened in 1973.  The company now operates over 10,000 stores in 30 countries across Europe.

Exciting news for Galway! Jobs Expo, Ireland’s largest careers and recruitment event, will take place for the first time in the City of the Tribes on Saturday 11 February 2017.

The hugely successful Jobs Expo has run in Dublin, Cork and Belfast since 2012 and has introduced thousands of jobseekers to hundreds of companies in a variety of sectors. Jobs Expo gives attendees the chance to meet companies in an informal setting, find out about them, and discover career opportunities in sectors they may not have previously considered. For companies, Jobs Expo streamlines the recruitment process, introducing them to a huge number of potential employees.

“We are asked regularly by employers and members of the public alike to bring Jobs Expo to Galway and now we are doing so," explains organiser Kevin Branigan of Careers Unlimited.

“Jobs growth in the West of Ireland is a priority for the government and there’s a lot happening already. The West is a globally recognised medical technology hub and the ICT sector is booming too. Mayo and Roscommon have a growing number of life sciences companies and Galway is a major tech centre. Many of these companies are in recruitment mode and as they grow they need all kinds of talent.”

Companies recruiting at Jobs Expo Galway will cover a number of industries. These include growth sectors such as science, technology, engineering and construction as well as long established sectors such as education, hospitality, retail sales, healthcare and more.

“It’s really important to us that each Jobs Expo features companies recruiting for a variety of roles. We want there to be something for everyone, whether they are looking for an entry-level or a senior position. Whether you are a graduate or a school leaver, highly skilled, unemployed or looking for new opportunities, there’ll be something for you,” says Kevin.

Like the events in Dublin, Cork and Belfast, Jobs Expo Galway will also include Jobs Expo’s very popular Career Clinic. Over the course of the event, jobseekers will be able to meet one-on-one with career coaches. The coaches will offer expert professional development advice and help jobseekers land their dream job. The Career Clinic is free to all attendees.

“The Career Clinic is one of the most popular aspects of Jobs Expo. The coaches help jobseekers with practical advice, such as CV preparation and interview skills. Even highly qualified people can need assistance with this. Being great at your job and being great at job interviews are very different skills!” says Kevin.

Jobs Expo Galway will also include a Seminar Zone featuring free, topical talks by industry insiders.

“The Seminar Zone is always packed. We’ve had some fantastic speakers over the years. At our last Cork event the National Ambulance Service gave a fascinating seminar on the work they do, US Immigration Attorney Caro Kinsella talked about getting a working visa to the States, and Leonard Donnelly of innovative tech company ArtofUs discussed the concept of human operating systems. That’s just to name a few,” explains Kevin.

We are delighted to announce that FIT will be exhibiting at Jobs Expo Cork.

If you are long-term unemployed, finding work can feel hopeless. It does not need to be. FIT is an industry-led initiative committed to transforming the lives of marginalised jobseekers and disadvantaged communities. They do this through their innovative ICT training courses. The initiative works in close collaboration with a number of bodies. Their primary partners in education and training include:

Supporting at-risk people and communities

FIT supports jobseekers at risk of, or already experiencing, long-term unemployment. They also work with early school leavers from disadvantaged communities.

As a result, they support the socio-economic transformation of marginalised jobseekers and disadvantaged communities. Firstly, they do this through offering innovative ICT training courses as a gateway to employment. FIT also develops and promotes technology-based programmes as well as career development opportunities. These are for jobseekers who have become detached from the labour market since Ireland has moved towards a knowledge-based economy.

Technologies now permeate across all industry sectors. Consequently, their work is now more crucial than ever. Therefore the initiative ensures that all jobseekers have the necessary skills to compete for new opportunities as they emerge.

Successfully assisting jobseekers

Established in 1999, FIT is a registered charity as well as a not-for-profit organisation. Since then, they have expanded substantially and now operate across the Republic of Ireland. In addition, they have recently commenced programmes in Northern Ireland under the banner FIT-NI.

To date, over 16,000 job seekers have completed their skills development programmes. Of this, in excess of 12,500 progressed into employment. Currently, 3,500 job seekers are participating in their programmes.

Recently the EU Commission cited FIT as one of the most effective employability initiatives in Europe.
