We wanted to know a bit more about joining the McDonald's crew. Eleanor Kearney, who has been with McDonald's for 19 years, kindly answered our questions. Don't forget McDonald's will be exhibiting at Jobs Expo Cork on Thursday 25th May!

What roles are you looking to fill at the moment?

We are looking to fill Crew and Customer care roles. Anyone interested can have a look here for further information.

What are the qualities you look for when hiring new team members?

We want to hire people that have an ability to connect with customers, and the desire to work as part of a team. Furthermore, we look for people that have high levels of energy and are efficient at getting things done.

What can new hires expect during their first week?

Each new crew person will receive an orientation on their first day. This is to introduce them to the company and give them all the information and training they need to get started. There is an individual training plan for their first 30 days, in addition to an assigned Crew Trainer to support them.

What makes McDonald's a great place to work?

McDonald’s provides a supportive workplace which values respect and fairness as well as camaraderie. We respect that everyone is different and recognise that people have different needs. Some people want career opportunities, others want flexibility to work around family life, while others want to earn some extra cash while working in a fun and friendly environment. A job at McDonald’s provides skills for life; confidence, teamwork and communication skills. Check out this video to hear what our people have to say:-

Tell us about opportunities for advancement?

McDonald’s is committed to developing employees’ careers. We believe in lifelong learning to help people develop their skills at McDonalds and beyond. Every one of our 5,000 employees take part in structured training across customer services as well as teamwork and restaurant operations.

A crew development programme brings a new starter to a fully trained crew member. On completion of this programme there are promotional opportunities available from Crew trainer to Area Manager and Shift Manager and beyond.

How does one go from working in a store to being a store manager?

To become a Store Manager, there is a progression route. This involves completion of the Crew Development Programme and from there progressing to Crew Trainer and Area Leader (Junior Manager).

In addition, there is a Management Development programme. This consists of formal classroom training as well as on the job informal training. As a result, this supports progression from Shift Manager to Assistant Manager and Business Manager.

Can you tell us about the Graduate Management Development Programme?

Several of our stores offer Graduate development programmes. This involves completion of the Crew development programme and progression to a management role subject to meeting criteria. There is a defined training programme of informal and formal classroom training.

How long have you been with McDonald's?

I have worked with McDonald’s for over 19 years. First off, I started as an Office Administrator and then moved to the restaurants. I am now the General Manager of a franchisee store, overseeing the management of four stores.

What do you enjoy most about your own job?

Every day is different in McDonald’s. I also really enjoy developing people on the team, providing training and support and then watching them progress and grown in confidence. Furthermore, I enjoy the flexible working hours with McDonald’s which allows me to manage my personal life.

Is there anything else you’d like potential recruits to know
