Abbott opened their plant in Lurganboy near Donegal town in 2006 to manufacture the worldwide supply of their FreeStyle brands of blood glucose test strips which are used in conjunction with blood glucose monitoring meters. As a result, the facility is a Centre of Excellence for blood glucose monitoring.

Today (16th July 2018), Med-tech Corporation, Cerner announced 50 new Research and Development-based roles for their Dublin Intellectual Property team. These new vacancies will be filled by software engineers, software architects, designers, and data visualisation developers – all with different levels of experience. Successful candidates will receive training on technology tools. This includes development in different programming languages, big data and Internet of Things technologies, and the Agile Software Development methodology.

Who is Cerner?

Based in Kansas, Missouri, Cerner is an American supplier of health information technology, services, devices, and hardware. Originally, Cerner was founded in 1979 by Neal Patterson, Paul Gorup, and Cliff Illig. At the time, they were colleagues at Arthur Andersen. Initially, they went under 'PGI & Associates'; however, this was changed to Cerner in 1984, when they rolled out their first system, PathNet. After going public in 1986, Cerner's client base grew to 250 sites by 1990. Over the years, Cerner acquired a number of companies and technologies. Their global reach continued to expand. In fact, in 2015, they were one of several companies awarded a 10-year, $4.3 billion contract to overhaul and manage the electronic health records for the US Department of Defense.

Nowadays, Cerner has 24,000+ employees worldwide, including a continually expanding team in their Dublin office. Opened since 2007, this Irish base is the centre for Cerner’s European support operations, alongside an Irish consulting team.

Cerner in Ireland

The Irish subdivision of Cerner will develop eHealth systems and will work with the HSE to deliver the national Maternity and Newborn Clinical Management System. When implemented, this will connect all 43 HSE laboratories across the country. Ultimately providing much needed support to improve the delivery of diagnostic lab medicine. Other areas assisted will be healthcare quality and efficiency in the Irish healthcare system, with the goal of providing a better patient experience.

The project Cerner is developing in Ireland will initially focus on developing predictive algorithms to run on Cerner’s platform, HealtheIntentSM. The aim is to help clients proactively manage health and improve the well-being of communities. These advancements enable a shift from reactive care to proactive health.

Speaking about the announcement, Matthew Pickett, Senior Director and General Manager for Cerner Ireland, commented. ‘Projects resulting from this new investment, supported by IDA Ireland, will enable the delivery of smarter, better care for citizens and healthier populations across the globe.’

Aiden Malone, Cerner's Senior Director for Population Health, added: ‘Population health is about taking responsibility for managing the overall health and wellbeing of a defined population and being accountable for the health outcomes of that population. It’s about how we can move from treating conditions to preventing them from happening in the first place.’
