About Finglas Training Centre

Finglas Training Centre, CDETB is located off the Jamestown Road in Finglas, Dublin 11. The Centre provides full, part-time, evening, apprenticeship and community based courses for up to 500+ students. They offer courses in areas such as IT, Design, Renewable Energy, Aircraft Maintenance, Software Development, Engineering and Business.

These courses are beneficial for those entering the labour market for the first time and those who wish to upskill, or change their career path. Courses are designed to equip learners with the skills necessary both to progress to further training and ultimately to employment.

All full-time courses offer certification leading to a range of awards as certified by awarding bodies including QQI, City & Guilds, CompTIA, Oracle, Microsoft etc. Details of all courses offered may be accessed either using the search facility, or alternatively, the full course listings for day, night and community.

Day courses

The FTC's range of day courses are designed to equip learners with recognised qualifications and employment relevant skills. All courses are certified leading to QQI (FETAC) Awards at levels 3, 4, 5 and 6 and/or to industry accepted accreditation and include a work placement element. The duration of training can vary ranging from two weeks to one year and run all year round.

The majority of courses are delivered on a full-time basis throughout the year in the Training Centre, with classes starting at 8.30 a.m. and finishing at 3.45 p.m. Monday to Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. until 12.45 p.m. on Fridays.

Evening courses

Finglas Training Centre provides training on an evening and part-time basis as part of their selection of certified training programmes.

Courses commence in three separate terms per year in September, January and April and run one or two evenings per week and / or on Saturday depending on the course you choose. Classes start at 6.30 p.m. and finish at 9.30 p.m. in the evenings and from 9 a.m. until 3.30 p.m. on Saturdays.

Careers in the Irish Defence Forces

The Irish Defence Forces is the military of Ireland. They encompass the Army, the Naval Service, the Air Corps and the Reserve Defence Forces.

The Army is a standing force and provides the primary capabilities for joint military operations at home and combined military Peace Support Operations abroad.

The Naval Service is the State's principal seagoing agency with a general responsibility to meet contingent and actual maritime defence requirements. It is tasked with a variety of defence and other roles.

The role of the Air Corps under the Defence Act is to contribute to the security of the State by providing for the Military Air Defence of its airspace.

 

Officer Cadetships

The Defence Forces are also looking to enlist Officer Cadets. A Cadet is a Military Officer in training. Officers are the leaders, decision makers and managers of the Defence Forces. They are the platoon commanders in the Army, the pilots in our Air Corps, and the navigators and engineers in the Naval Service. An Officer leads, directs and motivates our frontline troops. The role comes with very real mental and physical challenges. Officers are expected to lead from the front in all situations. Officer Cadets engage in 15 months training in the Military College, Curragh Camp, Kildare. Here, they cover many basic and practical soldier skills. Additionally, they learn military fields of study before taking up an operational appointment in the Permanent Defence Forces. The Defence Forces is looking for people who have the potential to:

After completing Officer training, cadets are commissioned into a Service Corp — Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry, Supply & Transport or Communications Information Systems. Furthermore, there are opportunities for development, growth, variety and responsibility will come your way.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or over and under 26 years of age on the date mentioned in the notice for the current competition.

WHAT IS THE TRAINING LIKE?

Cadetships

Cadets train for a total of 15 months. The training is conducted in the Military College, Defence Forces Training Centre, Co. Kildare. The purpose of cadet training is to develop character and leadership skills and instil a sense of duty and responsibility in the cadet. To benefit from that training, which is conducted in an environment of strict discipline, the cadet needs mental acuity and physical agility. During training an Army Cadet masters basic military skills, such as rifle marksmanship, as well as developing the leadership skills required of an Army Officer. Air Corps and Naval Service Cadets also undertake leadership and foundation military training before specialising as pilots, navigators or engineers. On commissioning the new Officer takes up a leadership position in one of the Army Corps.

Keith Coburn is a qualified and registered Guidance Counsellor with the I.G.C. (Institute of Guidance Counsellors). He has worked since 2008 helping individuals to achieve their goals, both employment and training/education wise. Keith holds a Masters in Guidance Counselling through D.C.U., along with other qualifications in Human Resource Management, Employment Law and Adult Education.

Keith has worked with a multitude of government funded projects since 2008, he has seen the landscape of employment opportunities change in the years from then. His work has brought him into direct contact with the likes of Accenture and Intel, where he offered his expertise on projects concerning both.

He has also delivered workshops and one on one supports across a variety of topics, including C.V /Interview techniques and general Career Guidance sessions.

About Charlie

Charlie Mernagh, a director of 2upskill.com, is a qualified coach and trainer. He coaches, mentors and trains jobseekers, staff, senior management and business owners. Additionally, he manages training delivery, securing employment for jobseekers through training and education and building brand awareness through targeted marketing.

Charlie brings a wealth of experience from various industries enabling him to understand what jobseekers and employers require for improving their performance. He has worked with clients from different sectors such as hospitality, motor, higher education, engineering, science, financial, food and drinks, building, and many others from the small and medium to the multinational and public sector.

Charlie holds a recognised qualification in Training and Education through NUI Galway and a HETAC qualification in sales coaching (QSC).

Experience
