A career with the NAS

The National Ambulance Service (NAS) provides a range of community emergency medical care services to the population and is delighted to be participating in Jobs Expo Galway.

This year the NAS is recruiting Student Paramedics, Emergency Medical Call Takers and Intermediate Care Operatives.

Student Paramedics

NAS currently employs approximately 2,000 staff of which 1,700 work as paramedics. Paramedics are trained at the National Ambulance Service College which has three campuses in Tallaght (Dublin), Ballinasloe (Galway) and Tullamore (Offaly).

Their Paramedic course is a degree level programme and takes three years. NAS maintains a panel of candidates who are invited twice a year to take up available places at the National Ambulance Service College.

There are some very attractive benefits on offer to Paramedic trainees including the following:

Emergency Call Takers

A regular supply of skilled and specially trained Emergency Call Takers is also required for the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) based in Tallaght, Dublin and in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal. Their emergency call takers are essential to ensure effective communication between the general public and the NAS, particularly as a result of emergency care needs.

NEOC utilises Advanced Medical Priority Dispatch System (AMPDS) using international standards in triaging and prioritising emergency calls. NEOC dynamically deploys resources to areas where cover is required or to respond to incidents as they arise to ensure the nearest available resource responds to emergencies.  All 112/999 calls are clinically triaged based on the patient’s condition.

Intermediate Care Operatives

The NAS also operates a fleet of intermediate care ambulances that serve the purpose of inter-facility transfers between hospitals as well as facilitating hospital discharges. Intermediate Care Operatives are required who are already qualified and certified by the Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council. They are provided with driver training and induction by the NAS College post recruitment.

Fast paced environment

The NAS staff work in a dynamic, fast moving environment providing a demand-led service for the whole population. Furthermore, they work alongside the Dublin Fire Brigade, Irish Air Corps, Irish Coast Guard, Irish Community Rapid Response and, at a community level, with First Responder teams.

At a local level, the NAS is also supported by over 140 Community First Responder schemes, responding to particular types of medical emergencies where it is essential for the patient to receive immediate life-saving care whilst an emergency response vehicle is en route to the patient.

In addition, the NAS works with the Irish Air Corps and the Department of Defence in operating an Emergency Aeromedical Service. They also partner with the Irish Community Air Ambulance service in Cork providing qualified paramedics to this service.

If you are interested in a career with NAS please contact them at director.nas@hse.ie and visit their stand on 23rd April.

The US software business Guidewire has announced its plans to create 150 hybrid positions across Ireland. The hiring for the roles comes as they open their new EMEA headquarters in Blanchardstown.

Ireland has been crucial to the company’s global growth over the past decade and they already have product and cloud development teams in Dublin. They are actively hiring for a number of different roles, some of which are graduate positions and others, entry-level.

Guidewire will be looking for cloud operations, consulting managers, business analysts, project managers, HR and recruitment, engineering, technology consultants, and specialist cloud transition roles. The business already had 450 team members across their Irish bases and they plan to increase this number to 600 over the next two or three years.

Although their office is situated in Blanchardstown in Dublin, the roles are open to people all across Ireland and are entirely flexible. The business provides cloud-based software to over 450 casualty and property insurers like American National, Aviva UK, Alliance Insurance, Zurich Insurance, and MetLife.

Since they opened their first office in Ireland 10 years ago, their Dublin base has become the biggest employee community outside of the US and in Europe. They have offices in Madrid, London, Chennai, California, Sydney, Kuala, Lumpur, Mississauga, Krakow, and Exton also.

The brand new 85,000 square foot office building in Dublin has an executive briefing centre for its clients.  Information about the roles can be found on Guidewire’s career page.

The telecoms tech company headquartered in Athlone will be setting up a new hub in Donegal for its ICT consultancy operation and its telecoms R&D. As a result, they will be creating a total of 50 new positions in Letterkenny.

These roles will be created at the company’s new hub over the next 18 months in the facility in Letterkenny. The business hopes to hire roughly 50 mid-level and senior software developers.

This new office will offer software development services such as 5G network deployment, 5G network consulting, ICT consultancy, and telecommunications R&D. In addition, there will be a graduate programme at this base.

Zinkworks has around 180 individuals working at its Athlone headquarters. The business was founded in 2018 with a focus on development and research in telecommunications, mostly in the area of 5G and it delivers its portfolio of products to customers.

The roles are being supported by IDA Ireland and Zinkworks was named the best employer in the Irish midlands by Statista and The Sunday Independent in 2021. More information can be found about the positions on the company’s website.

The file data services business, Nasuni is set to create 55 senior engineering roles at its new Cork base. Headquartered in Boston, the business is planning to hire for the roles over the next three years. Those hired will work in their new innovation centre in Cork.

All of the positions will be senior engineering roles. The business offers hybrid working across all of its offices. Therefore, it is expected that the Irish positions will also allow for hybrid working.

Their innovation centre in Cork will be the first for the business. They already have three offices in the US and will soon be expanding their presence in London, Benelux, and Germany. This is all part of their worldwide growth plans.

The business offers cloud file data services to companies and businesses, allowing them to protect, synchronise and collaborate across files. Some of their customers include Pernod Ricard, Shire, EA, GSK, Cushman & Wakefield, and McLaren.

The business has also hired Derek Murphy as its VP of engineering for EMEA. He has had similar positions at other companies like Apple, McAfee, Intel, and Forcepoint. Derek Murphy has worked in cybersecurity for the last 15 years, specialising in cloud services and products with attention to cloud operations and cloud software engineering.
