Newfoundland and Labrador’s Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism will be exhibiting at the Go Global section of Jobs Expo Dublin

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism

Fancy a new life in Canada? Newfoundland and Labrador’s Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism will be exhibiting at Jobs Expo Dublin. The event takes place on Saturday 13th October at Croke Park’s Hogan Suite.

Newfoundland and Labrador is the most easterly province of Canada. It has two main landmasses: the island of Newfoundland and mainland Labrador to the northwest. Nearly all of the province’s residents speak English as their mother tongue. St. John’s is the capital as well as the seat of government.Newfoundland and Labrador is also home to Acadian and Francophone communities with a rich history and vibrant present.

A long history of Irish settlement in Newfoundland and Labrador means few places share as much in common with Ireland. Here, you will find familiar accents, music, cultural activities – and even faces.

A Brief History

Newfoundland was a colony and later a dominion of the United Kingdom. It became the tenth province to enter the Canadian Confederation on March 31, 1949, as “Newfoundland.” The province’s official name became Newfoundland and Labrador in 2001.

Newfoundland and Labrador have a proud history of welcoming newcomers from all regions and cultures of the world. Newcomers to our province are encouraged to maintain and celebrate their culture, while enjoying all that their new home has to offer. There are many community organizations across the province, including faith, culture, and country-of-origin-based groups. Our province’s policy on multiculturalism is based on mutual understanding and respect of all cultures, as well as equality, cross-cultural collaboration, and inclusive citizenship.

Economy

The province had a major energy and resources boom in the 21st century. In addition, service industries, especially financial services, health care and public administration, are an important part of the province’s economy.

Traditional industries in the province include fishing. Other significant industries are mining, oil production and manufacturing. Food production and brewing also contribute to the province’s economy.

Tourism is also a significant contributor to the province’s economy. Tourism is most popular throughout the months of June–September, the warmest months of the year with the longest hours of daylight.

Immigration

The Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP) allows the Province to nominate skilled individuals who meet established criteria, for Permanent Resident Status. The NLPNP offers an efficient immigration process for qualified skilled workers, international graduates and their families who wish to settle permanently in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Atlantic Immigration Pilot (AIP) is an employer driven immigration program aimed at addressing skills gaps and labour market needs in the four Atlantic Provinces by assisting employers in attracting and retaining skilled workers.

To participate, employers must meet certain requirements, including a commitment to support the newcomer and their family as they integrate into their new life in Atlantic Canada. Employers can bring workers through AIP’s High Skilled, Intermediate Skilled, and International Graduate categories.

The Peter McVerry Trust joins Jobs Expo Dublin

Peter McVerry Trust

We extend a warm welcome to one of Ireland’s most important charities, the Peter McVerry Trust, who will be joining us at Jobs Expo Dublin.

History of the Peter McVerry Trust

The Peter McVerry Trust is a charity started by Father Peter McVerry SJ. Fr McVerry has been working with Dublin’s young homeless for more than 40 years.  In 1974, Fr McVerry moved to Summerhill, in Dublin’s north inner city. Here he witnessed firsthand the problems of homelessness and deprivation.

In 1979, he opened a small hostel. This provided accommodation for homeless boys between the ages of 12-16.

In 1980 Fr McVerry moved to Ballymun. By the end of 1983 he had founded the Arrupe Society, a charity to tackle homelessness. This charity was subsequently renamed as the Peter McVerry Trust. It began with a three bedroom flat in Ballymun. Since then the Trust has opened eleven homeless hostels and over 100 apartments. In addition, the Trust runs a residential drug detox centre and two drug stabilisation services. Fr McVerry’s vision is to support marginalised people and to uphold their rights to full inclusion in society.  In 2013 the charity worked with almost 3,600 vulnerable youths.

Graduate Programme 2017

Peter McVerry is currently looking to hire dynamic, talented and professional graduates for their 2017 Graduate Programme. The Trust offers a structured career and development path for successful graduates within a leading organisation in the field of social care/inclusion.

Teaching in New Zealand. We have the low down…

New Zealand

New Zealand teacher recruitment agency Education Personnel will be joining us at Jobs Expo Dublin. If you’re a teacher, you may be wondering what opportunities are available, how tricky it would be to move and, perhaps most importantly, what living in New Zealand is like.

We spoke to Education Personnel’s Clinton Meneses to find out more.

What kinds of teachers are you looking for?

In New Zealand’s current education market there is high demand for teachers. Mathematics, technology, engineering, business studies, physics, chemistry, English and modern foreign language teachers who teach to senior level in secondary schools are highly sought after in New Zealand.

Roles for Early Childhood and Primary Teachers are also in high demand in New Zealand. If you are Catholic, this also creates job opportunities.

Demand is highest in the North Island and particularly in Auckland and Wellington. In addition, secondary shortage subjects are in high demand throughout the country. Demand for teachers in all sectors is growing and building across New Zealand.

What subjects are most in demand?

Secondary STEM subjects are in highest demand, and newly qualified teachers (NQTs) are in demand in Secondary Schools.

Do you recruit newly qualified teachers?

A Working Holiday Visa permits you to find employment as a casual relief supply teacher. In New Zealand that’s known as a  supply teacher. This can be a good starting point for a primary NQT. Term 2 and 3 is the busiest time for this type of work. Relief teaching and contracting provides a great entry point for teachers recently arrived in New Zealand, especially those on working holiday visas. You still need to have an NZQA assessment and gain NZ teacher registration with the Education Council.

What support do you offer to teachers looking to work in New Zealand?

There is a specific process you need to go through. This involves a New Zealand qualifications assessment, New Zealand teacher registration, salary assessment and work visa. Since Education Personnel have supported hundreds of teachers through this process we can advise you on the best way to go, and ensure you are well prepared to begin your teaching career in New Zealand.

How long does the process take?

On average the process takes about 3 to 5 months.

Where in New Zealand are the schools you are recruiting for?

Education Personnel recruits for secondary schools throughout New Zealand. That means from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island. Certain regions have higher demand than others. This will dictate the number of roles advertised in this region. Some smaller and more desirable places to live have fewer vacancies as with any country in the world.

Auckland vs Wellington – what are the key points of each?

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest urban centre. It has a population of 1.4 million people and it is home to almost a third of New Zealand’s population.

As the biggest city in New Zealand, Auckland has the most schools and some of the largest. Teaching in Auckland, you’ll be a part of a wider vibrant and supportive teaching community with numerous opportunities to grow and develop professionally. In addition, as it is near the top of the country, Auckland has what is considered a subtropical climate.

Wellington in New Zealand’s capital city. It has a population close to 500,000 people. Wellington has more sunshine hours than either Dublin or London and less rainfall than Auckland. Immigrants should feel at home – around a quarter of the people in Wellington were born overseas. It has a rich cultural scene, which makes it as exciting place to teach and live for singles and families. Schools in Wellington are diverse. Each school has a unique character based on its local community and ethnic makeup.

What, in your opinion, are the three major reasons teachers should consider relocating to New Zealand?

New Zealand is a great place to live and teach. It has a diverse landscape consisting of cities, farmland, regional parks, mountains, forests and beach. Large back-country areas are well set up for mountain biking, skiing, hiking and camping. New Zealand is famous for its world-renowned food and wine. Music is a big part of our culture and there are many concerts, festivals and that showcase these throughout the year. There is something here for everyone.

The New Zealand education system is broad and world- renowned. Irish and UK teachers enjoy teaching in NZ with its affordable health care and education. Schools pride themselves on being safe learning environments with a robust, child centred curriculum.

New Zealand has the work-life balance just right. Working hard and getting ahead is important to us. However, New Zealanders also believe life is for living.

Boston Scientific

If you are working in the STEM sector, you can’t afford to pass up the opportunity to meet with Boston Scientific at Jobs Expo Dublin. But what exactly do they do? And what’s it like to work for them? We thought we’d let them tell you in their own words.

About Boston Scientific

Boston Scientific is dedicated to transforming lives through innovative medical solutions that improve the health of patients around the world.  We are the largest medical device employer in Ireland and we employ over 5,000 people in our 3 Irish sites in Galway, Cork and Clonmel.

A culture of continuous improvement, innovation and knowledge driven product development defines Boston Scientific, Clonmel. We design, develop and manufacture Pacemakers, Defibrillators, Spinal Cord Stimulators and Deep Brain Stimulators. These complex medical solutions treat the world’s major health issues.

50% of Europeans will suffer some form of heart condition. Our S-ICD™ System is a new generation of defibrillator that leaves the patient’s heart entirely untouched. Therapy is delivered without the need for wires implanted in the heart – making the procedure less invasive for patients.

The single biggest cause of adult disability is chronic pain and affects one third of the US population. 1% of Americans will develop Parkinson’s disease. Our Vercise™ Deep Brain Stimulator (DBS) is the world’s first system designed for accurate neural targeting. This system allows patients to have control to manage symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and essential tremor

Our implantable devices combine innovative mechanical and electrical technology with cutting edge software algorithms. These devices provide real time data to physicians for a range of parameters such as physical activity, breathing and heart rate. The individualised data enables physicians to better understand, diagnose and treat patients in a more effective and efficient manner.

We have a very creative culture in Clonmel. We don’t consider any challenge insurmountable.  Working in this environment, helping to deliver new and better solutions, helps to transform the lives of millions of people around the world.

Suir Engineering: a success story

Suir Engineering

There are a number of great opportunities for engineers at Jobs Expo Dublin this October. We have a dedicated STEM Sector, and one of the big names recruiting at the event is Suir Engineering.

“Our main areas of activity would be in pharmaceuticals, data centres, power stations, wind farms, heavy industry and commercial buildings,” explains business development director, David Phelan.

“We have over five hundred people working for us across the island of Ireland.

“We offer our clients electrical and mechanical contracting service. Our main areas of activity currently are with companies such as Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, West Pharma, Genzyme, MSD, Bausch & Lomb, Intel, SSE, ESB and Dairygold.”

From small beginnings…

Suir Engineering was originally set up thirty-five years ago in south Kilkenny. They began as a small, local business. In their early days, the company focused on the food and diary industries.

Suir is now part of the Imtech UK and Ireland group of companies. Headquartered in Ashford and with offices throughout the UK and Ireland, the Group is one of the largest managed technical service providers in the UK and Ireland with annual turnover now exceeding €400m.

Investing in people and relationships

Part of Suir’s growth strategy is investment in their people.

“We are a direct employee business and train and develop our own people,” explains David. “Clients recognise and appreciate this. Our business is about our people, our culture and our strategy. Operational excellence and innovation is at the centre of everything we do.”

The aim, says David, is for Suir Engineering  to become the most respected, sustainable technical services business in Ireland and internationally.

“As a broad-based technical services provider we meet all our clients’ needs. This starts from design support of mechanical and electrical systems through to the installation and whole-life maintenance and management of these assets. Plus, with the increasing pressures on our energy resources, we continually endeavour to provide low-carbon solutions, wherever possible,” he says.

Relationships, says David, are a key part of that aim.

“Relationships are what it is all about – giving the customer what they want and what they need and meeting their future requirements.”

This strategy is working, with the company continuing to grow both domestically and internationally.

“There is great momentum behind the growth,” says David. “The future is bright and very positive.”
