What roles are you looking to fill at the moment?
We are looking to fill Crew and Customer care roles. Anyone interested can have a look here for further information.
What are the qualities you look for when hiring new team members?
We want to hire people that have an ability to connect with customers, and the desire to work as part of a team. Furthermore, we look for people that have high levels of energy and are efficient at getting things done.
What can new hires expect during their first week?
Each new crew person will receive an orientation on their first day. This is to introduce them to the company and give them all the information and training they need to get started. There is an individual training plan for their first 30 days, in addition to an assigned Crew Trainer to support them.

A crew development programme brings a new starter to a fully trained crew member. On completion of this programme there are promotional opportunities available from Crew trainer to Area Manager and Shift Manager and beyond.
How does one go from working in a store to being a store manager?
To become a Store Manager, there is a progression route. This involves completion of the Crew Development Programme and from there progressing to Crew Trainer and Area Leader (Junior Manager).
In addition, there is a Management Development programme. This consists of formal classroom training as well as on the job informal training. As a result, this supports progression from Shift Manager to Assistant Manager and Business Manager.
Can you tell us about the Graduate Management Development Programme?
Several of our stores offer Graduate development programmes. This involves completion of the Crew development programme and progression to a management role subject to meeting criteria. There is a defined training programme of informal and formal classroom training.
How long have you been with McDonald’s?
I have worked with McDonald’s for over 19 years. First off, I started as an Office Administrator and then moved to the restaurants. I am now the General Manager of a franchisee store, overseeing the management of four stores.
What do you enjoy most about your own job?
Every day is different in McDonald’s. I also really enjoy developing people on the team, providing training and support and then watching them progress and grown in confidence. Furthermore, I enjoy the flexible working hours with McDonald’s which allows me to manage my personal life.

What SECAD can do for you
The organisation provides employment supports to individuals and groups who are seeking employment, education or training. SECAD also provides an information service in five locations in East Cork, Ballincollig, Carrigaline, Cobh, Midleton and Youghal.
SECAD’s supports include mentoring, training courses, small grants and networking to people setting up their own business. Furthermore, under the Local and Community Development Programme, SECAD provides a range of supports to communities and individuals. These include funding for community projects, training courses for community groups, training programmes to support people who are seeking work or education. This also includes supports for mental health projects and youth projects. In addition, SECAD operates a community based rural transport service.
Employment Pathways Service
SECAD delivers the Employment Pathways Service (EPS) in targeted towns based on the highest level of deprivation.
This service focuses on the following elements:
- One to one support for individuals furthest from the labour market to explore options around employment, self-employment, training and education;
- Group level support around CV preparation, interview skills, Technology for Work skills, social welfare guidance including support around Back to Education Allowance and access to other public employment services including JobBridge, Tús, JobPath, Education and Training Board (ETB) training opportunities, etc.
- Accessing online and web based employment support and recruitment platforms.
- Youth focussed activation programme, KICKSTART in one area.

The Department of Social Protection supports the Minister for Social Protection with governmental, parliamentary and departmental duties. Their main functions are:
- To advise the government
- Formulate appropriate social protection and social inclusion policies
- Design, develop and deliver effective as well as cost-efficient income supports, employment services and other related services
- Work towards providing seamless delivery of services in conjunction with other Departments, agencies and bodies
The Department serves a wide and diverse group of clients. This includes employed as well as unemployed people. However, they also work with families, people with disabilities, carers and pensioners. They administer over 70 different schemes and services. Consequently, the Department impacts the lives of almost everyone in Ireland.
Intreo is a new service from the Department of Social Protection. It is a single point of contact for employment and income support. Therefore, it provides a streamlined approach. As a result, Intreo offers practical, tailored employment services and supports for both jobseekers and employers.
EURES: Working in Europe
EURES is the European Job Mobility Portal. It is a network that facilitates the free movement of workers across the EU, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. They also provide specific information and help employers and workers fill and find roles.
Learning and Upskilling
The Department helps also jobseekers gain new skills through training or education. It does this through providing courses for the unemployed. These include the Springboard+ and Momentum courses amongst others. In addition, the Department also offers back to education supports and training support grants.

Aimed at those looking for a new job or career, Ireland’s premier careers fair, Jobs Expo, returns to Cork on Thursday 25th May. The event takes place between 12pm and 7pm and features employers from a variety of sectors. These include ICT, medtech, healthcare, hospitality and retail, amongst others.
Exhibitors include multinationals such as BD Medical, Eurofins and McDonald’s as well as leading Irish employers, Adare Manor, Aspira, PhoneWatch and Peter Mark. Also in attendance will be the Government of the Isle of Man, who will showcase the variety of career opportunities on the island. In addition, US Immigration Attorney Caro Kinsella returns to advise attendees on how to obtain a US Visa to work in the USA.
Organisers have extended the event’s opening times to 7pm to allow for evening attendance. “We decided to extend our event times to accommodate jobseekers who can’t get time off during the day,” says organiser Bronagh Cotter of Careers Unlimited.“We know from previous events that many attendees are already employed but looking for new challenges so we will be open until 7pm in the evening.”

Jobs Expo Cork is run every 6 months at Clayton Hotel Silver Springs and brings thousands of job opportunities to Cork.
“Jobs Expo Cork has something for everyone. There will be vacancies for highly skilled professionals, graduates and school leavers, as well as people returning to work. We also have opportunities for people who need to upskill or are looking for a change in career direction,” says Bronagh.
“Whatever their sector, companies need staff of all types of staff. Jobs Expo gives attendees the chance to see what’s on offer in a variety of companies and industries, including ones they may not have considered previously,” explains Bronagh.
Free seminars and career advice
As well as companies recruiting at the event, there will also be a series of talks from industry insiders at Jobs Expo’s Seminar Zone and Agenda Stage. Talks include opportunities with Aspira, FIT’s Software Development Apprenticeship Style Programme, and working in the USA. The Seminar Zone is free-of-charge to all attendees on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Finally, the very popular Career Clinic returns. Over the course of the day, jobseekers will be able to meet one-on-one with career development coaches. The coaches will offer expert professional development advice as well as help jobseekers land their dream job.
