We are very proud to announce that Minister for Employment Affairs & Social Protection, Regina Doherty, will attend Jobs Expo Dublin. The Minister is due at the event in the morning.

“We are delighted to have the Minister come along to Jobs Expo, and that she is also offering the Government’s support for the event,” says organiser Bronagh Cotter.

“Jobs Expo’s aim has always been to help jobseekers find fulfilling and rewarding work, as well as assist companies to fill vacant roles. Both of these are crucial to the Irish economy. We know from the latest Central Statistics Office figures that joblessness is falling. However, 11% of Irish people live in jobless households. At the same time, there are several companies very keen to recruit and grow. We really appreciate the Government’s support of our efforts to assist both candidates and companies,” she added.

Prince Edward Island

We are proud to announce that the Government of Prince Edward Island will be exhibiting at Jobs Expo Dublin. You will be able to find out about jobs and opportunities on PEI.

Prince Edward Island has beautiful rolling hills, pristine forests and amazing beaches. The coastline has numerous bays, coves and small inlets as well as red sandstone cliffs.

Island Life

Because PEI is small, it offers what many larger cities cannot. These include shorter commute times and affordable housing as well as lower start-up costs for business.

PEI has a mild climate thanks to the warm waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In summer, the temperature ranges between 20 and 34 degrees Celsius. In autumn, the leaves change colour to breathtaking shades of orange, red, and yellow. Winters are white. PEI receives an average total yearly snowfall of 290 centimetres (114 inches). Temperatures range between -3 to -11 degrees Celsius but cold winds can make it feel significantly chillier. Spring temperatures are mild – between 8 to 22 degrees Celsius.

Working on Prince Edward Island

PEI offers rewarding career opportunities as well as a business community that is supportive of entrepreneurs. Students come to PEI from more than 60 countries to experience first-rate education.

Prince Edward Island’s economy has a mix of traditional resources as well as new industries. Business acumen and entrepreneurship are at the core of PEI’s economic success. Economic sectors include:

Government of Nova Scotia to recruit at Jobs Expo Dublin

Nova Scotia

We are happy to announce that the Government of Nova Scotia will attending Jobs Expo Dublin. They will be recruiting on behalf of companies in the province.

Overview

Nova Scotia is one of the four Atlantic provinces of Canada and home to nearly 1 million people. Set on Canada’s east coast, Nova Scotia has over 3,800 coastal islands in addition to the mainland territory. Halifax, with a population of over 400,000 people, is Nova Scotia’s largest city and its political capital. It is also one of Canada’s major seaports and a main gateway to the Atlantic Ocean.

Halifax

Halifax is the capital and one of Canada’s most important ports, especially for new immigrants. Halifax’s Pier 21, which was once the main entry point for newcomers to Canada, is now an immigration museum.

As a provincial capital, government at all levels is an important employer in the Halifax area. Halifax is also home to central operations for Canada’s Department of National Defense. Another major employer in the city is the Port of Halifax, one of the most important ports in North America. Like any major modern city, Halifax is home to a thriving service industry and many private sector companies. With the growth of offshore oil and gas production, this sector is becoming an increasingly important employer in Nova Scotia.

Halifax is a center for learning and culture. The city is home to a large number of post-secondary institutions, most notably Dalhousie University and Saint Mary’s University. The community enjoys a bustling artistic scene, one which produces some of Canada’s top musicians. Halifax has also grown recent years as a center for film production.

Economy and Employment

Nova Scotia has a very diverse economy. It includes key industries in the service, manufacturing and mining sectors.

Nova Scotia has a highly developed forestry sector as well as a highly specialized commercial agriculture sector. The mining sector is dominated by coal production. The province of Nova Scotia has recently begun to benefit from the extensive exploration of offshore oil and gas has been undertaken in the past decade.

Since the first commercial production of oil began near Sable Island in 1991, oil and gas revenues have increased significantly, helping to fuel the transformation of Nova Scotia’s economy.

Tourism is also an important sector in the provincial economy. Almost two million visitors come to Nova Scotia each year, many of which come from outside Canada.

Government of New Brunswick, Canada joins Jobs Expo Dublin

New Brunswick

We are proud to announce that the Government of New Brunswick will be taking part in Jobs Expo Dublin. The Government will be recruiting on behalf of companies and industries in this region of Canada.

Location and Geography

New Brunswick is the largest of Canada’s three Maritime Provinces. On the map, you’ll find it under Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula and beside the State of Maine. Its northern border also includes the Restigouche River and the Baie des Chaleurs.

The eastern boundary is entirely coastal. It has warm, sandy beaches, and also has the warmest salt water north of Virginia.

Chignecto Bay and the 24-kilometre wide Isthmus of Chignecto, connects New Brunswick to Nova Scotia. This forms part of New Brunswick’s southern border.

An eastern seaside province, New Brunswick has beautiful sandy beaches in the summer, spectacular autumn foliage, wildflowers in the spring and pure, white snow in the winter. The province is marked by its rolling hills and spectacular valleys, as well as its historic and modern architecture located in many of its cities, towns and villages.

Its rivers, such as the mighty St. John, the magnificent Restigouche or the majestic Miramichi, all possess unique characteristics unlike anywhere else you can find. From rolling farmlands to picturesque forests, river valleys to rocky pinnacles, the beauty and variety New Brunswick offers is unique in the world.

Cities

New Brunswick’s communities vary from its eight major cities. These are Bathurst, Campbellton, Dieppe, Edmundston, the provincial capital of Fredericton, Miramichi, Moncton and Saint John. In addition, there are many attractive towns and villages located throughout the province.

New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program (NBPNP)

NBPNP is a provincial immigration program. NBPNP selects, as well as nominates, qualified business people and skilled workers from around the world who will live in New Brunswick and contribute to the local economy.

Like many other Canadian provinces and territories, New Brunswick has its own immigration program streams, targeting certain groups, and eligibility criteria.

Some streams target entrepreneurs, graduates, skilled workers with employer support, skilled workers with family support and so forth.

Special panel talk on the “glass ceiling” and the gender pay gap

glass ceiling

This October’s Jobs Expo Dublin will host a special panel discussion: Breaking The Glass Ceiling: Women and the Gender Pay Gap.

Andrea Hayes will moderate the panel. Joining her will be broadcaster and journalist Barbara Scully, founder of Enhance Medical, Aisling Holly and documentary maker Angela Mezzetti.

About Andrea

Andrea is an award-winning author and is best known for presenting TV3’s hugely successful series ‘Ireland’s Animal A&E’, ‘Coming Home For Christmas’ and Life Stories in Dublin Airport. She is also a regular guest presenter on TV3’s all female panel show Midday and has regularly contributed to the breakfast show Ireland AM over the years. She has been working with TV3 since 2005. Andrea has just completed her first book with Mercier Press. She is also the Editor for the Irish Wedding Diary magazine. Her flair for writing has seen her articles appear regularly in Woman’s Way magazine, she has also written for, Slainte Health Magazine, Chronic Pain Ireland, Oh Baby magazine, The Waiting Room magazine and is looking forward to more writing work in 2016.

The Discussion

Why does the glass ceiling and gender pay gap still exist for women? Women are better educated than men, but earn less and don’t climb the career ladder in the numbers we should. Is this by choice or is the fault of a culture that descriminates against women?

Irish women are better-qualified and more likely to have a third-level qualification than Irish men. Not bad when you consider that it was only in 1977 that the Employment Equality Act prohibited discrimination on the grounds of gender or marital status in most areas of employment. But women still earn less than their male counterparts. Women are still under-represented in management, even in the sectors where they are the majority of employees, such as the public, health and education sectors. They are similarly under-represented in the Oireachtas and in local and regional authorities.

What has stopped women from getting to the top in their chosen professions? Having a family is certainly a factor; most opportunities for career development take place during a woman’s child-bearing years.

Motherhood and societal perceptions

There is a societal perception that women ‘check-out’ of their career after having a baby. The idea is that having a career while raising a family held little interest for them. Does a career may move down the priority list when children come along? Should this affect career ambitions? Mothers learn they are no longer ‘players’ in various, sometimes subtle ways. For women, taking advantage of flex options or reduced schedules results in ‘punishment’. They do not get high-profile assignments, and projects they once led go to someone else.

How do we close the gap between expectation and reality? Is a change in work culture the answer? Should we not encourage both men and women to balance careers with family?

The Gender Pay Gap

What about the gender pay gap? The European Commission say that the gender pay gap in Ireland is widening, from 12.6%, in 2009 and 2008, to 13.9%, in 2010, to a shocking 14.4%, in 2012. An Irish ‘Men and Women in Ireland’ report shows that 50% of women in Ireland earn €20,000 or less and women are only half as likely as men to earn €50,000 or more.

Our panel discussion will debate these issues and provide some answers on what is the best way to position either your application for a job or your current career to best navigate the gender pay gap and glass ceiling.

History of Armour Transportation Systems

Gordon Armour founded Armour Transportation Systems back in the 1940s. He set up shop from scratch in the small community of Taylor Village in New Brunswick. In those days, Armour transported hay out of the village, using his own truck. The service continued into the 1950s and then evolved from hay to food, commodities and Christmas trees.

The business transported these goods to Nova Scotia as well as the United States. The service eventually became a business in 1955. Gordon Armour called it GM Armour & Son LtdArmour gained a reputation for his hard work and honesty, as the company was always went the extra length to please their customers.
