A career with the NAS

The National Ambulance Service (NAS) provides a range of community emergency medical care services to the population and is delighted to be participating in Jobs Expo Galway.

This year the NAS is recruiting Student Paramedics, Emergency Medical Call Takers and Intermediate Care Operatives.

Student Paramedics

NAS currently employs approximately 2,000 staff of which 1,700 work as paramedics. Paramedics are trained at the National Ambulance Service College which has three campuses in Tallaght (Dublin), Ballinasloe (Galway) and Tullamore (Offaly).

Their Paramedic course is a degree level programme and takes three years. NAS maintains a panel of candidates who are invited twice a year to take up available places at the National Ambulance Service College.

There are some very attractive benefits on offer to Paramedic trainees including the following:

Emergency Call Takers

A regular supply of skilled and specially trained Emergency Call Takers is also required for the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) based in Tallaght, Dublin and in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal. Their emergency call takers are essential to ensure effective communication between the general public and the NAS, particularly as a result of emergency care needs.

NEOC utilises Advanced Medical Priority Dispatch System (AMPDS) using international standards in triaging and prioritising emergency calls. NEOC dynamically deploys resources to areas where cover is required or to respond to incidents as they arise to ensure the nearest available resource responds to emergencies.  All 112/999 calls are clinically triaged based on the patient’s condition.

Intermediate Care Operatives

The NAS also operates a fleet of intermediate care ambulances that serve the purpose of inter-facility transfers between hospitals as well as facilitating hospital discharges. Intermediate Care Operatives are required who are already qualified and certified by the Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council. They are provided with driver training and induction by the NAS College post recruitment.

Fast paced environment

The NAS staff work in a dynamic, fast moving environment providing a demand-led service for the whole population. Furthermore, they work alongside the Dublin Fire Brigade, Irish Air Corps, Irish Coast Guard, Irish Community Rapid Response and, at a community level, with First Responder teams.

At a local level, the NAS is also supported by over 140 Community First Responder schemes, responding to particular types of medical emergencies where it is essential for the patient to receive immediate life-saving care whilst an emergency response vehicle is en route to the patient.

In addition, the NAS works with the Irish Air Corps and the Department of Defence in operating an Emergency Aeromedical Service. They also partner with the Irish Community Air Ambulance service in Cork providing qualified paramedics to this service.

If you are interested in a career with NAS please contact them at nas.corporate@hse.ie and visit their stand on 18th February. We run job competitions at various times during the year and they are advertised when live on the HSE website.  To check visit hse.ie/jobs and search Ambulance.
