In 1876, Colonel Eli Lilly in Indianapolis founded Eli Lilly and Company. The Colonel was a pharmaceutical chemist and a veteran of the US Civil War. At the time, medicine was often ineffective or badly made. He decided to prepare high quality medicines, based on the best scientific research. He also decided that doctors should dispense his medications, not travelling salesmen.
Colonel Lilly laid down the foundations that are at the core of the company that bears his name. Eli Lilly focuses on the quality of their products as well as the discovery and development of new and better medicines.
Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, Eli Lilly is one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical manufacturers. It was also the first company to mass-produce penicillin, the polio vaccine and insulin. The company has a global workforce of more than 41,000 people.
