In 1876, Colonel Eli Lilly in Indianapolis founded Eli Lilly and Company. The Colonel was a pharmaceutical chemist and a veteran of the US Civil War. At the time, medicine was often ineffective or badly made. He decided to prepare high quality medicines, based on the best scientific research. He also decided that doctors should dispense his medications, not travelling salesmen.
Colonel Lilly laid down the foundations that are at the core of the company that bears his name. Eli Lilly focuses on the quality of their products as well as the discovery and development of new and better medicines.
Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, Eli Lilly is one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical manufacturers. It was also the first company to mass-produce penicillin, the polio vaccine and insulin. The company has a global workforce of more than 41,000 people.
In July 2010, Eli Lilly chose Cork as the location for the company’s European Shared Services. The centre is located in Eastgate Business Park in Little Island. This Cork operation has over 350 employees. This was part of a strategy to gain efficiencies in areas of finance.
Since then, the Cork operation grew to covers areas such as Global Travel and Meeting Services, HR, Data Operations and Customer Meeting Services. In addition, Cork recently added Medical Information, Global Customer Operations and a Content Management Hub to their services. As a result, Eli Lilly in Cork works is a Global Business Solutions operation and a Centre of Excellence to achieve overall Eli Lilly objectives.

In May this year, Eli Lilly announced plans to expand its manufacturing site in Kinsale. This will create hundreds of new jobs in addition to the 500 people already employed by the company in Kinsale.
