The Defence Forces have advertised that they are hiring for several essential positions. They are looking for “men and women from all backgrounds that possess a strong sense of duty, enjoy working as part of a team, and are looking for a rewarding yet challenging career". 

Below are the roles available with The Defence Forces: 

Naval Services Direct Entry Officers 

The Naval Services are providing a number of opportunities for Marine Engineering Officers, Electrical Officers and Bridge Watchkeeping Officers (Operations Branch). They are looking for individuals with leadership skills that are ‘highly motivated’.  

Re-Enlistment Permanent Defence Forces 

Ex-service personnel who have served in the Irish Permanent Defence Forces can apply for re-enlistment if they meet the specified requirements.  

Army and Naval Service – General Service 

They are looking for a diverse group of applicants who have a strong sense of duty.  

Army applicants must be at least 18 years old and under the age of 25 on the closing date for applications.  

Naval Service applicants must be at least 18 years old and under the age of 27 on the closing date for applications.  

Candidates may have to interview at one of the following locations:

  • Cork, Carlow, Clare, Galway, Kerry, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Offaly, Tipperary, Wexford and Waterford.  
  • 1 Brigade – Cork Interview Centre 
  • 2 Brigade – Dublin / DFTC Curragh Interview Centre 
  • Dublin, Cavan, Donegal, Kildare, Leitrim, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Roscommon, Sligo, Westmeath and Wicklow. 

Irish Naval Service Radio Radar Technician 

Job responsibilities include maintaining, managing and crewing the ship in addition to keeping it operational. 

A Leading Radio Radar Technician (L/RRT) will be trained to perform the responsibilities and roles of a Non Commissioned Officer (NCO) and technician at sea. 

Selected applicants will be responsible for the Operation, Maintenance, Installation and Repair of all Communications and Navigation on board. 

Irish Naval Service Carpenter/Hull Artificer 

A Hull Artificer will be given additional training so that they can perform the responsibilities and roles of the job at sea onboard Irish Naval Service vessels. 

Irish Naval Service Electrical Artificer 

Applicants for this position must between 18 years of age to 26 years of age on the date of application. 

Direct Entry Engine Room Artificer Technicians (Marine/Mechanical) 

The position will involve giving technical support onboard a fleet of nine ships. Candidates for this position must between 18 years to 26 years on the date of application. 

Naval Service Direct Entry Chief 

The Naval Service is looking to recruit suitably qualified chefs to be part of their team that protects and patrols the Irish territorial waters. 

Defence Forces Medical Officer 

Candidates will need to possess the appropriate medical qualifications as well as the following skills: 

  • The ability to prioritise, plan and organise.  
  • A reasonably high level of personal fitness. 
  • Concise, clear and effective communication skills. 
  • The ability to work with a team and motivate others.
