A brief history of Bulk Carriers

Bulk Carriers (P.E.I.) Limited is a family owned and operated business, started in 1973 by Jack Kelly and his wife Carlotta. Jack is still actively involved in the operations as are his two sons. Currently, they have approximately 120 employees and operate 90 trucks throughout North America. They are in Prince Edward Island and this is the location of the company's home and only terminal. From there, Bulk Carriers dispatch trucks and loads throughout North America offering their customers superior logistics as well as friendly service.

In the beginning, Bulk Carriers was a one truck operation. They hauled of bulk petroleum throughout Prince Edward Island for Gulf Canada. From there, the company expanded into the hauling of liquid asphalt.

By the late 1990s, the company diversified into long haul refrigerated transport. They have concentrated on this market ever since. Furthermore, operations have expanded steadily since 2000. Currently, the company has a large number of trucks and trailers. As a result, their staff is continually growing.

The safety of their staff, fleet as well as their client’s cargo is a priority for Bulk Carriers. Therefore, they focus on maintaining a high level of certification and safety training, and continue to find ways to improve all levels of their operation. In 2013, Northbridge Insurance awarded Bulk Carriers with platinum status. The award is for superior safety management systems, and consequently, Northbridge only gives this award to the top 5% of the transportation companies they insure.

A little bit about Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island is in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The island is pastoral with rich farm land, rolling hills, woods, reddish white sand beaches and ocean coves as well as its famous red soil. As a result, the island has a reputation as a place of outstanding natural beauty and is popular with tourists.

According to the 2016 census, the province of Prince Edward Island has 142,907 residents. However, it’s most famous “resident” is Anne Shirley – the spirited redheaded orphan made famous by L.M. Montgomery’s much loved Anne of Green Gables books.
